) irene
-
the well-known song by Huddie Ledbeter, aka Leadbelly
2)
same stone -
i wrote this shorty after moving to LA in '73 for a young lady whose
intentions were clearly less that pure. she didn't get to hear
it. the demo was produced by sometime record mogul and fair
weather friend, Val Garay. it was nice of him to do it.
better would have been if he had produced a record of it and made
us a few bucks. the song, in retrospect seems like
quintessential southern California country-rock. the Eagles could
have made it a big hit, but as usual ... it stayed in the can.
3)
lullaby of b'way ii - this
performance was recorded in 1976, at Juicy John Pink's in Dekalb, Il.
i include it here because i actually talk, i.e. introduce the song
like a 'real' performer. ;)) this was usual. so, i give this version to
prove a point. i could do when i felt like it, which was not
always. for add'l notes on this song, click here
4)
the holy city -
this was recorded at a concert in Rindge, NH @ 1981. the song is
an old 'sacred' chestnut which my friend, Arlene Dart, organist at the
Peterborough Unitarian Church thought i should learn. i did, just
to please her. she accompanies me here on piano
5) a note on freedom -
i performed this monologue as part of a show at Jon Barleycorn
Pub, in Chicago in 1976. i had sketched it out after a visit to a
club in rural Illinois, where i had taken a walk in the fields
near the venue in the afternoon before my show. as i walked
i became disoriented and for a while, i was 'lost', although i could
not have been very far from where i started.
and so ......
voilà, great art is born. ;))
